Phi Science Institute in collaboration with Beyond Limits decided to launch this Arab AI challenge for the first time to encourage start-ups and individuals (developers) to use Artificial Intelligence algorithms, methods & techniques in their innovative solutions/ products.

AI is a fast-moving field and breakthroughs are happening at an unprecedented pace. AI is in everything. It’s involved in education, agriculture, energy, healthcare, space and many other sectors in our lives. Therefore, instead of setting one global challenge, AAIC invites Startups/ Developers in the AI fields to each creates and discovers their own grand challenges to be solved using Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning algorithms and come up with a novel and innovative solutions. Challenges literally include everything, from preventing the extinction of different species to solving global sustainability challenges. This competition aims to answer the question of:

AAIC’19 offers the opportunity for start-ups and developers to connect with interested Arab governments and investors. This will help spread their innovative solutions and products and gain visibility among the Arab region and the whole world. The prestigious judges will help in providing expert feedback for those young entrepreneurs to help pursue their journey.
AAIC’19 adopts two tracks:

Community interaction applications, such as transportation, or tourism applications Medical and healthcare fields, such as: empowering people with disabilities, or tracking diseases as they spread. Advance environmental sustainability, such as: Natural disasters prediction, protecting endangered species, agriculture improvement or others. AI in fintech oraccounting enhancement. Integrating AI projects with other applications, like IoT, Data Science, Robotics and others. AI in our social and everyday activities, such as AI in cooking, AI in entertainment ...etc AI for Industry improvement to enhance productivity. AI for human interaction, such as NLP (Natural Language Processing), NLU (Natural Language Understanding) and ASR (Automatic Speech Recognition) including Chatbots, like Siri, Cortana. Any other field stated to be useful for the community. AI in Education, such as: tracking students’ progress to optimize their performance and Intelligent Tutoring Systems.

The application can be submitted by: Startup companies that work in any field of AI. Individuals or teams of developers up to 4 members. Startup companies who have commercialized working product and a well-defined business model. Applicants must be between 18 – 40 years old.

The application can be submitted by: Startup companies that work in any field of AI. Individuals or teams of developers up to 4 members. Startup companies who have commercialized working product and a well-defined business model. Applicants must be between 18 – 40 years old.

Please note that any information provided by the applicant will be confidential and will not be shared with any other parties. Read the terms & conditions below very carefully before filling the application:

  • Applications’ submission starts from June 21st, 2019 until:
    • Midnight of Aug 24th, 2019 for developers (Individuals/ Teams).
    • Midnight of Oct 1st, 2019 for startups.
  • Applications submitted after the deadline will not be considered.
  • All applications must be fully completed, otherwise will be excluded immediately.
  • Only applications submitted through the website form will be accepted.
  • Scientific fraud and misconduct at any level of the competition will lead to exclusion from any Phi competition. This includes plagiarism, forgery, use or presentation of other’s work as one’s own and fabrication of data.
  • All contributors to the idea must be mentioned and stated.
  • An application submitted must submit one leading person for contact and competition administrative purposes.
  • Biases and facts-manipulation applications will be directly eliminated.
  • Projects must not contain any potentially harmful or abusive applications. And must be aligned with the principles of international law and human rights.
  • The top chosen applicants from the first stage will be asked to send the following:
    • A short 1-2 minute video summarizing their projects.
    • Their pictures and biographies.
    • Their presentations/ prototypes at least 1 week before the summit.
    • A poster to be presented at the summit exhibition summarizing their work.
  • Phi Science Institute will have an equity of the business side without having any royalties. This equity will be as follows so we can recycle that return to fund other promising projects:
    • 10% from winners in the “Developers” track
    • 1% from winners in the “Startups” track
  • Any sufficient programming language can be used through any suitable platform to satisfy the goal.
For Startups:$ 15,000 USD for the first winner
For ideas from Individuals/ teams:$ 7,500 USD for the first winner

Arab AI start-ups are requested to submit their developed AI empowered solutions/ products targeting different problems in the industry through the form below.

Top 10 finalists will have the opportunity to pitch their work in front of the experienced judging panel and audience in the Arab Artificial Intelligence Summit 2019.

Three winners will get the prize that will help develop their start-up.

Useful Information:

Referring to Google’s guidelines for AI projects, the Rules of Machine Learning which guides Machine Learning projects are as follows:

“Most of the problems you will face are, in fact, engineering problems. Even with all the resources of a great machine learning expert, most of the gains come from great features, not great machine learning algorithms. So, the basic approach is:

    1. Make sure your pipeline is solid end to end.
    2. Start with a reasonable objective.
    3. Add common­-sense features in a simple way.
    4. Make sure that your pipeline stays solid.

 

This approach will make lots of money and/or make lots of people happy for a long period of time. Diverge from this approach only when there are no more simple tricks to get you any farther. Adding complexity slows future releases.”

 

The Arab AI developers are requested to submit their developed AI empowered solutions/ ideas targeting different problems in the industry through the form below.

Developers are recommended to use a variety of Artificial Intelligence algorithms in general and Machine Learning in specific to discover new relations between different features in the chosen challenge to propose a solution for their defined problem.

The following performance measurement parameters will be taken into account through the judging process (Model/ code judging criteria will be In terms of:

  • Performance metrics: measuring the applications’ performance by different metrics (accuracy, recall, f-score, Dice similarity coefficient and others).
  • Dataset size: The number of training examples used.
  • Biasing & Generalization: How the training examples are not biased and to ensure the model is working on different datasets.
  • Computation cost: How much time and memory used to run the code are computationally expensive.
  • Justification for the chosen algorithm.

From August 27th To October 15th, 2019

The top 30 applicants will be asked to fill another detailed report before proceeding to the final stage. Developers have to submit a private Github project or a detailed document/ report describing the following in details:

  • Model and algorithm details.
  • Data collecting and analysis process.
  • Model learning curves and learning rate.
  • Code script with comments.
  • The framework used to implement to model.

Useful Information:

Training datasets can be used from online open-sources, local organizations, governmental entities, any trusted data resources, or even collecting data through different techniques. The collected data are to be analyzed to achieve a well-structured prediction or analyzing model, such as:

  • Regression Algorithms: Discovering relationships and parameters between datasets in order to fit these data into functions that predict outputs based on new inputs.
  • Classification Algorithms: A supervised learning approach, in which the algorithm learns from given labeled data as inputs and implement the learned model to classify new observations.
  • Neural Network Analysis: Studying relationships between ’nodes’ of different features and related parameters.
  • Any other related models and algorithms are applicable, and any computational tools and resources can be used to address the problem.
